Why Spotify Pre-Save?

In this blog post, I explain how Spotify pre-save works and why it is important for DIY musicians like myself to promote an upcoming single or album.
Release: How does it work?
The mechanism is very simple: when you release a single or an album, you send your track to a distributor (such as TuneCore, DistroKid, or CD Baby) and set a release date. The distributor will share your music with your favorite online streaming platforms and stores (Spotify, Apple Music, Google Play Music, Amazon Music, etc.). On the release date, your music will be magically available online! Cool, right?
Spotify or Die
The first step for a DIY musician is finding an audience, a group of people that are interested in your music. One of the best way to do so is to get into a Spotify playlist. Ryan Waczek, in this very informative youtube video, explains how the Spotify algorithms seem to be very sensitive to the number of plays you get on release date. Now, if you already have a lot of followers, that’s not a big deal. Your fans will be notified and they will do the work for you. But what if you are just starting and only your lovely grandmother follows you? Well, there is only one answer: you need to get followers on Spotify before the release date and beg them to pre-save.
Pre-Save, Please!
Spotify pre-save allows you to save an upcoming song in your favorite playlist. On the release date, the song will be available to play. Simple, right? Well, the hard part is getting Spotify users to engange with something they don’t really know about, especially if you are just starting. Almost everybody (who ‘s made it!) suggests working your way up by engaging with potential followers on social media. For example, you can share a short video featuring your upcoming single, or write a blog post about your single, or you can do both!
